Gommone (self-hire boat) notes

• High-season rental for a 5–6 m / 40 hp boat, plus fuel, national park permit (rental firm usually arranges), and a security deposit.
• Anchoring IS allowed on sand (not on seagrass/posidonia); swimming and snorkelling off the anchored boat is standard practice. Zone A areas (e.g. Spiaggia Rosa) are no-entry.
• 40 hp cruises ~15 knots — whole northern archipelago (Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria, Razzoli) is within ~7 nm; easy day loop. Corsica crossing usually prohibited by rental terms.
• Operators: La Maddalena Exclusive Boats, Noleggio Gommoni La Maddalena, Elena Tour (also does skippered hires).

PACK: snorkel gear — the Orosei coves (Mariolu, Goloritzè, Biriola) are the best snorkelling of the whole trip.

⚠️ Book ahead (August sells out)

• Gulf of Orosei — BOOKED ×2 (7 Jul): guided cruise Sat 8 Aug (pickup 08:00 at the hotel) + Cala Mariolu jeep-hike-boat Sun 9 Aug (08:15 at the marina). Details & refs in the timeline above.
• Cala Goloritzè daily cap — max ~250 visitors/day on the beach; entry must be pre-booked via the official Heart of Sardinia app/site (Comune di Baunei). In August slots go fast — book as soon as your day is fixed. Applies to the hike; boat passengers swim in from the 300 m buoy line (no landing, no mooring inside — swim/paddle only).
• Cala Mariolu also has a landing cap + small fee (same Heart of Sardinia app) — organised boats usually handle it, self-drive gommone: book it yourself.
• Self-drive gommone (if chosen instead of tour) — 40 hp, no licence needed. Reserve 2+ weeks ahead (SMN marina or Cala Gonone).
• Il Rifugio di Golgo / Golgo goat restaurants — dinner books out in August; reserve a few days ahead by phone.

Ranked list

1. Gulf of Orosei boat day (Goloritzè, Mariolu, Biriola, Sisine, Luna) — the headline act. Full-day tour with 3–4 swim stops; or self-drive gommone for freedom. Bring snorkel gear; Mariolu's fish life is superb. 8h.
2. Hike to Cala Goloritzè from Su Porteddu (Golgo plateau) — 3.5 km, ~1h down / 1.5h back up, 470 m descent. Pre-book cap slot (see above); parking available at Su Porteddu. August heat: start 7:00–8:00, 2L water each, no shade on return climb. Half day. Only do if boat day skips a proper Goloritzè stop — otherwise it duplicates.
3. Pedra Longa — 128 m limestone spire rising from the sea, 10 min drive from hotel. Sunset aperitivo/dinner at the little restaurant below it; swim off the rocks. 1–2h, free.
4. Golgo plateau circuit (Baunei) — Su Sterru chasm (295 m single-drop abyss, fenced viewpoint), tiny San Pietro church, wild pigs and donkeys; lunch on spit-roast goat/suckling pig at Il Rifugio di Golgo (book ahead). Spectacular hairpin road up from Baunei. Half day; combine with #2.
5. Selvaggio Blu stage 1 taster: Santa Maria Navarrese → Pedra Longa — coastal path from town, big cliff views, ~2h one-way easy-moderate; or continue up toward Punta Giradili viewpoint (strenuous, guide not needed for stage 1). Go early morning; carry water. Free.
6. Grotta del Bue Marino (Cala Gonone) — famous sea cave, former monk-seal haunt; guided south-branch tour ~1h, entry plus boat transfer from Cala Gonone (combined tickets available; often bundled with Cala Luna). Book online day-before in August. ~1h15 drive to Cala Gonone.
7. Cala Gonone day — pretty port town, aquarium, beach hop (Cala Fuili), and the 1h coastal hike Cala Fuili → Cala Luna (bar on the beach; boat back available). Scenic SS125 drive north ~1h15. Full day; only if you want a second sea day beyond the boat trip.
8. Santa Maria Navarrese itself — beach 5 min from hotel, 1,000-year-old church of Santa Maria with ancient olive trees, Aragonese watchtower, evening passeggiata + gelato at the marina. Zero effort rest day fillers.
9. Arbatax Rocce Rosse — surreal red porphyry rocks by the port, 15 min drive; best at sunrise/sunset, free, 45 min. Combine with a Tortolì shop/supermarket run.
10. SS125 "Orientale Sarda" scenic drive (Baunei → Dorgali stretch) — one of Italy's great roads, gorge and Supramonte views; Dean will wish he had a motorcycle. Do it as part of #6/#7. Rental bikes/quads occasionally available in Cala Gonone if the itch is real.
11. Kayak or SUP from Santa Maria Navarrese — rentals at the marina; paddle the coast toward Pedra Longa in calm morning water. 2–3h.
12. Orosei old town — Baroque churches and lanes at the gulf's north end; pleasant but 1h30+ each way — skip unless already at Cala Gonone with time spare.

Notes

• 11 Aug departure: SMN → Cagliari Airport is ~140 km / 2h15–2h30 via Tortolì–Bari Sardo–Tertenia (SS125/SS125var) then SS554 — winding early section, don't trust optimistic ETAs. Car drop 15:00, flight 17:00: leave the hotel by 11:45–12:00, fuel up in Tortolì before setting off. Morning of 11 Aug = beach/checkout only, no excursions.
• Keep the boat trip flexible between 8 and 9 Aug for sea conditions, then lock the Goloritzè hike/permit or Golgo day into the other date.
• Cash: Golgo restaurants and some boat operators prefer contanti; Baunei has the nearest ATM after SMN.
• August sun is brutal on the Supramonte — all hikes start by 8:00, hat + 2L water pp minimum.

Route context: Land Palermo 18:00 on 11 Aug, car from 18:30 — first night is just dinner + sleep in/near Palermo. Drive east over ~4–5 nights, exit via Messina ferry to the mainland ~15/16 Aug (must be near Bari night of 19 Aug). 15 Aug is Ferragosto — Italy's biggest summer holiday: beaches rammed, restaurants booked out, everything open but crowded. Plan Etna or driving (not beach towns) for that day.

⚠️ Book ahead

• Etna summit crater tour (cable car + 4x4 + guide to ~2,900m) — the one true sell-out. Book 2–3 days ahead online via funiviaetna.com or GetYourGuide; around Ferragosto book as soon as your dates firm up.
• Taormina Teatro Antico — buy the timed ticket online the night before to skip a long August queue.
• Syracuse Neapolis Archaeological Park — timed entry; book online 1–2 days ahead in August.
• Alcantara Gorges body-rafting/river trek (if doing the guided version) — 1–2 days ahead. Walk-in gorge entry usually fine.
• Palazzo dei Normanni/Cappella Palatina and Monreale Duomo: normally fine day-of (go at opening).

Suggested route zones (Palermo → Messina flow)

1. Palermo + Monreale — nights of 11 & 12 Aug (arrival night + 1 full day). Markets, Cappella Palatina, cathedral, street food; Monreale is 20 min up the hill. 🌠 Night of 12 Aug: Perseid meteor shower peak — the Perseids reliably peak around 12–13 Aug every year (radiant in Perseus, rising in the NE), best viewing after ~11pm and improving toward pre-dawn. Palermo's city lights will wash it out, so worth a short drive/walk to somewhere darker — the Monreale hillside or a coastal spot away from downtown — and check the moon phase/forecast closer to the date. No booking needed, just a clear sky and patience.
2. Cefalù — stop en route 13 Aug (1 hr from Palermo). Morning swim + old town, then drive on. Sleep Cefalù 12th instead of Palermo if you prefer beach over city.
3. Etna / Taormina base (Nicolosi, Zafferana, Giardini Naxos or Castelmola) — nights 13 & 14 Aug. Etna one day, Taormina + Isola Bella/Alcantara the other. Taormina itself is the priciest, most booked-out base in August — the satellite towns are easier as-you-go.
4. Optional Syracuse/Ortigia + Noto swing — costs a night. It's 1h15 south of Catania (backtracking from the Messina exit). Only do it if you take 5 Sicily nights and ferry across on the 16th. With 4 nights, skip it.
5. Messina ferry morning of departure — 1h drive from Taormina, no booking needed.

Agrigento honest call: skip it. Valley of the Temples is superb but it's a 2h+ detour southwest — the wrong direction for a Palermo→Messina flow, in 35–40°C heat with zero shade. Save it for a future dedicated Sicily trip.

1. Etna summit tour from Rifugio Sapienza — cable car to 2,500m + 4x4 bus + guide to ~2,900m crater zone, half a day. Alternatively self-hike free from the cable-car top (rules allow to ~2,920m unguided when activity is low — check status; above that a guide is mandatory). Bring warm layers even in August (~10°C up top). Sunset tours run in summer and dodge the heat.
2. Palermo old town + street food — Cappella Palatina's golden mosaics (Palazzo dei Normanni, closed Sun afternoon for the chapel), the cathedral (roof walk available), then eat: panelle, sfincione, arancine (Palermo says -e, Catania says -o), pane con la milza if brave. Free wandering, one evening + one morning.
3. Monreale Duomo — the finest Norman-Byzantine mosaics in Europe, 20 min drive above Palermo. 1–2 hrs. Go at 08:30 opening before tour buses.
4. Taormina: Teatro Antico + old town — Greek theatre with Etna framed through the ruins, book online. Arrive before 09:00; park at Porta Catania or Lumbi garage and walk — the centre is ZTL and August gridlock is real.
5. Ortigia island, Syracuse (if doing the southern swing) — Duomo built inside a Greek temple, morning market (great for picnic supplies), swim off the Forte Vigliena platforms. Half a day, mostly free.
6. Cefalù — morning swim on the town beach with the old town backdrop, cathedral mosaics (free/small fee), then the La Rocca hike (45–60 min up, brutal after 10:00 in August — go early). Half a day.
7. Isola Bella, Taormina — pebble-beach nature reserve below town, excellent snorkelling around the rocks — your gear earns its keep here. Cable car available from town. Combine with the theatre morning.
8. Alcantara Gorges — lava-rock canyon with knee-numbing cold river water, 30 min from Taormina; entry via the Gole park lifts, or free via the communal stairway. Bloody refreshing on a 38°C day; water shoes help.
9. Ballarò market, Palermo — the rawest, loudest of Palermo's markets (Vucciria is now more nightlife than market — go at night for drinks instead). Mornings only. Free.
10. Neapolis Archaeological Park, Syracuse — Greek theatre, Ear of Dionysius, latomie quarries. timed ticket, 2 hrs, zero shade — first slot of the day.
11. Noto — golden-baroque main street, 40 min from Syracuse. 1–2 hrs strolling + the famous caffè stops: Caffè Sicilia (Corrado Assenza) for granita and gelato. Only fits with the southern swing.
12. Granita con brioche for breakfast — mandatory east-coast ritual (almond or coffee granita + warm brioche). Best around Etna/Acireale/Taormina; also seek out cannoli filled to order, never pre-filled.
13. Castelmola — tiny village above Taormina, almond wine at Bar Turrisi, best free panorama on the coast. 1 hr, easy parking vs Taormina.
14. Aci Trezza / Cyclops coast swim stop — lava-stack sea stacks north of Catania, decent snorkelling off the rocks; an easy pause driving between Syracuse and Taormina.

Notes

• ZTL = the biggest rental-car fine risk of the trip. Palermo (whole historic centre, camera-enforced weekdays), Taormina (centre closed to non-residents, cameras at Porta Catania/Messina), Syracuse/Ortigia (island is ZTL) — fines apply for each pass, and Sicily By Car adds an admin fee per notice, often arriving months later. Rule: never drive toward a historic centre; park in a paid garage/lot outside and walk. Blue lines = paid, white = free, yellow = residents only.
• Messina → Villa San Giovanni ferry: two operators, Caronte & Tourist (drive-up, every ~40 min around the clock, ~20 min crossing, pay at the port) and Bluferries. No booking needed even in August — just allow queue time on 15–16 Aug (Ferragosto returns). From the Villa SG side it's ~4.5–5 hrs to Bari.
• Heat: expect 33–40°C. Sightsee 08:00–12:00, swim or drive 13:00–17:00, towns in the evening. Carry water; many archaeological sites have no shade. Etna is the cool escape.
• Autostrade A20/A18 have tolls (cash/card). Fuel up before Etna back-roads.
• Book each night's stay by lunchtime that day — mid-August same-day inventory exists but shrinks by evening, especially Taormina proper (use the satellite towns).

Route context: Entering from Calabria after the Messina ferry (~15/16 Aug); Villa San Giovanni → Matera is ~5–6h on the A2 then SS106/SS407 — a long haul, so Matera makes the natural first stop. Hard deadline: sleep in/near Bari 19 Aug, car drop Bari Airport 10:00 on 20 Aug, Volotea 11:50 to Corfu.

⚠️ Book ahead (with lead times)

• Grotta Palazzese cave restaurant (Polignano) — only if you want the splurge (set menu, dress code). Books out weeks-to-months ahead for August dinner; 2026 reservations already open online. Skip the meal and just view the cave from the Lama Monachile side — free and nearly as good.
• Matera guided sassi tour — 1–2 days ahead is fine, even in August. Book a small-group walking tour for the first morning.
• Castellana Caves — buy the timed online ticket the night before in August (full 3km/100-min tour sells out on peak days); walk-up is risky mid-August.
• Nights of 16–17 Aug (Ferragosto week) — no need to pre-book now, but book each night by lunchtime same-day on Booking.com; Matera cave hotels and Alberobello trulli stays are the two where same-day choice thins out fastest.
• Everything else in Puglia is genuinely walk-up friendly.

Suggested route flow (3–4 nights)

• Night 1 (16 Aug) — Matera. Long drive day from the ferry; arrive late afternoon, sassi at golden hour. Book-as-you-go idea: a cave hotel in Sasso Barisano/Caveoso (plenty of mid-range options).
• Night 2 (17 Aug) — Matera again or Valle d'Itria. If Matera grabs you, take the full day (Murgia park, Casa Grotta, tour) and drive to the Valle d'Itria on the 18th. Otherwise drive over on the 17th (~1h15) and sleep in a trullo near Alberobello/Locorotondo.
• Night 3 (18 Aug) — Valle d'Itria (Alberobello, Locorotondo, Ostuni loop — all within 30 min of each other; Castellana Caves en route).
• Night 4 (19 Aug) — Polignano a Mare or Bari. Coast day (Polignano + Monopoli, swim), then sleep Polignano (35 min to airport) or Bari itself. Polignano is the nicer evening; either works for the 10:00 drop.

Ranked list

1. Matera sassi at sunset + evening wander — the trip highlight. Walk Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso when the stone glows; the town is magical after dark and August evenings are lively, not dead.
2. Murgia Timone viewpoint (Parco della Murgia) — drive/walk across the ravine for the classic full-frontal view of the sassi; go at sunrise or sunset, not midday (no shade, brutal heat). Tibetan-style footbridge crosses the gorge if you want the hike.
3. Polignano a Mare — Lama Monachile & cliff walks — the famous pebble cove framed by cliffs. Swim early (before 9:30) or late; by 11:00 in August it's towel-to-towel. Terrazza Santo Stefano and Pietra Piatta ledges for cliff views; peek at the Grotta Palazzese cave from above.
4. Matera guided sassi tour + Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario — 2h walking tour decodes 9,000 years of cave-dwelling; Casa Grotta (furnished cave home, small fee, no booking needed) shows how families lived until the 1950s evictions. Also see the rock churches (Madonna de Idris).
5. Alberobello trulli — go before 8:30am or after 6pm; mid-day in August is coach-tour gridlock. Rione Aia Piccola is the quiet residential half — skip the souvenir strip of Rione Monti crowds. 45 min–1h is enough.
6. Ostuni (the White City) — hilltop tangle of whitewashed lanes with Adriatic views; best in late afternoon into aperitivo hour. Park in the lower town lots and walk up — do not drive into the centro.
7. Monopoli old port — colourful blue boats, honest working old town, far less touristy than Polignano 10 min away. Cala Porta Vecchia for a swim under the walls; good dinner town.
8. Snorkelling: Polignano coves or Torre Guaceto — gear finally earns its keep. Cala Paura and Porto Cavallo (just north of Polignano) are rockier and clearer than Lama Monachile. Torre Guaceto marine reserve (40 min south of Monopoli) is the best water but adds driving — only if you want a full beach morning.
9. Locorotondo + Valle d'Itria back roads — arguably prettier than Alberobello and nearly empty; circular white old town, Cummerse rooftops, trulli-dotted countryside drives between Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca. Lunch or aperitivo stop.
10. Bari Vecchia — Basilica di San Nicola (Norman, crypt with St Nicholas's relics) and the orecchiette ladies hand-rolling pasta on Strada delle Orecchiette (Arco Basso) — mornings best. 2–3 hours on the evening of the 19th or spare morning time is plenty.
11. Castellana Caves — spectacular 3km karst show-cave ending at the white Grotta Bianca; 100-min guided tour, constant 16.5°C — a genuinely great escape from the August heat. Right on the Matera→Alberobello route.
12. Lecce & Salento/Otranto — honestly, skip this trip. Lecce is 1h40 south of the Valle d'Itria, Otranto 2h+, and August Salento traffic is grim; squeezing them in torches a full day of a 3–4 night window. They deserve their own future trip.

Notes

• Driving times: Villa San Giovanni→Matera ~5.5h; Matera→Alberobello ~1h15; Alberobello→Ostuni ~35 min; Alberobello→Polignano ~40 min; Polignano→Bari Airport ~35 min; Matera→Bari Airport ~1h.
• ZTL warnings: Matera — camera-enforced ZTL around the sassi and centro; park at Via Saragat/Via Vena lots or your hotel's arranged spot and walk. Bari — Bari Vecchia and murattiano centre are ZTL; use the port-side paid lots. Alberobello/Polignano/Ostuni — no real ZTL issue but use the signed paid lots on the edge of town; don't chase street parking in August.
• Beach culture in August: most sandy stretches are paid lidos (sunbed+umbrella hire, often "full" by 10am around Ferragosto); free (libera) sections exist but arrive by 8:30. The rocky Polignano/Monopoli coves dodge this — bring reef shoes.
• Ferragosto tail: 16–17 Aug is still peak-holiday Italy — restaurants busy (book dinner same-day by phone), roads busiest late afternoon.
• Bari Airport 20 Aug: allow 30 min for the rental return process (return lots are a shuttle/short walk from the terminal); leave Polignano by 8:45 or Bari by 9:00 for the 10:00 drop, fuelled up (Q8 station near the airport exit). Volotea check-in/bag drop closes 40 min before the 11:50 flight — the 10:00 drop leaves a comfortable margin.

Context: Two short windows around the yacht week — 2 nights at Maltezos Hotel, Gouvia (land 13:50 on 20 Aug from Bari), then 1 night post-yacht on 29 Aug before the 08:15 flight to Kefalonia via Athens on 30 Aug. Yacht route 22–29 Aug is the skipper's domain — not planned here.

⚠️ Book ahead

• Scooter hire for 21 Aug — book 2–4 weeks out; August scooters sell out in Gouvia/Corfu town. Dean needs motorcycle licence + IDP (Cat A) in hand at pickup; helmets legally required and supplied. Rental shops in Gouvia (e.g. along the marina strip) or Corfu town; confirm 125cc not 50cc for the hill roads.
• 29 Aug accommodation — deliberately unbooked, but late August is peak season: check Corfu town / Kanoni availability a few days before disembarking rather than truly winging it. Kanoni or town = closest to airport.
• Pre-book a taxi for 30 Aug ~05:45 — dawn taxis in August must be arranged the night before (hotel desk or Corfu Taxi +30 26610 33811); buses don't run that early.
• Achilleion Palace tickets: buy online day-before to skip the queue (optional).

Day 1 — Wed 20 Aug (land 13:50)

• Airport → Gouvia is ~20 min by taxi. Check in, swim off Gouvia beach or hotel pool to shake off the flight.
• Late afternoon: bus or taxi into Corfu Old Town (15 min, blue bus #7 runs Gouvia–town ~every 30 min until late). Wander the UNESCO old town: Liston arcade, Spianada esplanade, back alleys (kantounia).
• Golden hour: climb the Old Fortress (open to ~20:00 in summer) for harbour views, or just drinks on the Liston.
• Dinner in town (Rex, or a taverna in the Jewish quarter) or back at Gouvia marina strip — relaxed waterfront tavernas 10 min walk from Maltezos.

Day 2 — Thu 21 Aug (scooter day)

Classic west-coast loop, ~70–80 km round trip, comfortable full day on a 125cc:

1. Gouvia → Paleokastritsa (~22 km, 35–40 min via Tzavros junction). Arrive by 09:30 before crowds/heat.
2. Paleokastritsa: swim/snorkel Ampelaki or Agia Triada bays (excellent snorkelling off the rocks); 30-min boat trip to the sea caves (on the beach); free Theotokos Monastery on the headland (shoulders covered).
3. Lakones / Bella Vista viewpoint (~10 min winding climb) — the postcard shot over Paleokastritsa's bays. Coffee at the Bella Vista café.
4. Angelokastro (via Krini, ~15 min further) — 13th-c. Byzantine clifftop castle, 15-min steep walk up; huge coastal views. Carry water.
5. Return via Troumpettas pass or detour to Doctor's Beach (Rovinia) if energy allows. Back in Gouvia by ~17:00; sunset drink at the marina.

• North-coast alternative (Kassiopi, Cape Drastis, Canal d'Amour/Sidari): honest take — that's a 100–120 km loop with slow coastal road sections; doable but a long slog on a scooter in August heat. The yacht will likely see Kassiopi/NE coast from the water anyway — pick the west-coast loop.

29–30 Aug window

• Off yacht morning of 29 Aug at Gouvia area. Aim to sleep in Corfu town or Kanoni (airport is 2–3 km from both).
• Afternoon option: bus/taxi to Kanoni — viewpoint over Vlacherna Monastery + Mouse Island (Pontikonisi), café terraces watching planes land over the lagoon; walk the causeway to Vlacherna (free).
• Evening: farewell dinner in the Old Town — Campiello quarter or the marina at Mandraki under the Old Fortress.
• Airport logistics for 08:15 flight: check-in opens ~2 h before; be there ~06:15. No public bus that early — pre-booked taxi ~05:45–06:00 (from town 10 min; from Kanoni 5 min). CFU is small; 06:15 arrival is ample even in August.

2. Paleokastritsa swim + boat caves + monastery — scooter day anchor; go early. (Skipper may also call here by sea — still worth it from land for the monastery.)
3. Lakones/Bella Vista viewpoint — 10 min above Paleokastritsa; don't skip.
4. Angelokastro — best castle-and-cliff combo on the island; pairs with #2–3.
5. Kanoni + Vlacherna/Mouse Island — save for 29 Aug; free, photogenic, near airport.
6. Snorkelling Paleokastritsa's clear-water coves — bring your own gear; rocky edges of Ampelaki bay.
7. Achilleion Palace (Sisi's palace, Gastouri) — 20 min south of town; ornate but can be coach-tour busy; slot into 29 Aug afternoon only if keen.
8. Gouvia marina dinner + old Venetian shipyard (Arsenal) ruins — easy 20 Aug or pre-yacht evening.
9. Dassia/Ipsos beach strip — 5–10 min north of Gouvia; watersports and beach bars; filler only.
10. Kassiopi & north coast (Canal d'Amour, Cape Drastis) — striking, but far by scooter; likely covered better from the yacht — leave to the skipper.

Notes

• August heat: ride mornings, swim middays; carry water on the scooter.
• Greek roads: helmets non-negotiable, watch gravel on hairpins above Paleokastritsa; police do check IDPs on tourists.
• Blue city buses (#7 Gouvia) vs green intercity buses (Paleokastritsa, Sidari) both leave from/near San Rocco Sq, Corfu town — useful fallback if the scooter falls through.
• 22 Aug morning (pre-yacht): keep free for provisioning/transfer to the marina.

⚠️ Book ahead

• Melissani: no pre-booking possible — just timing. Arrive ~11:00 to beat the tour-bus queue and still catch the 11:00–14:00 light shaft (see #4).
• Boat hire (no licence, ≤30hp) from Fiskardo or Agia Efimia: in early Sept usually bookable 1–2 days ahead, but reserve 3–4 days out to get a good boat. Regina's Boats (Fiskardo) or Agia Efimia hire outfits.

• Accommodation: Paradise View, Asos (30 Aug–5 Sep); Romanza Studios, Asos (5–6 Sep) — booked.
• Transfers — sorted by the rental car (pickup 30 Aug 15:00, drop 6 Sep 13:00). Welcome Pickups arrival transfer cancelled.
• Scooter — decided against it. Car covers all getting-around; not renting one this leg.
• To book: optional boat-hire day.

Ranked list

1. Asos village + Venetian castle walk — on your doorstep. 40–60 min uphill path from the harbour to the 16th-c fortress; go early morning or golden hour. Swim off the village pebble beach after. Free.
2. Myrtos Beach — the postcard. Viewpoint is ~10 min ride from Asos (stop on the main road); switchback road down to the beach, ~15–20 min total. Steep drop-off, dramatic swimming, little shade — go morning. Canteen only.
3. Fiskardo — prettiest harbour village on the island, Venetian houses, good (pricey) waterfront tavernas. ~35–40 min winding ride north. Snorkel at Emblisi (2 km before town) and Foki (fjord-like, olive trees, best snorkelling in the north) — both free, bring your gear.
4. Melissani Cave lake — collapsed-roof cave, 20-min rowing boat on glowing turquoise water. Daily 8:00–20:00; the sun shaft hits ~11:00–14:00, which is worth planning around. ~50 min ride (31 km). Queues peak 12:00–13:30, so land ~11:00.
5. Antisamos Beach — Captain Corelli's beach; green hills meeting white pebbles, clear water, two beach bars with loungers. ~60 min ride via Sami — pair with #4/#6, don't do it standalone.
6. Drogarati Cave + Sami — big stalactite chamber (15–20 min visit, cool at 18°C), 5 min off the Sami road; Sami itself is a workaday port with decent waterfront lunch. Natural bundle with Melissani/Antisamos.
7. Boat-hire day from Fiskardo or Agia Efimia — no-licence boat along the Ithaca channel: empty coves, snorkelling off the boat. Arguably the best day of the week.
8. Argostoli morning — capital; loggerhead turtles cruise the harbour by the fish stalls ~8:00–10:30, then De Bosset bridge walk and a coffee on the plateia. ~55–65 min ride — combine with Robola winery (#9) on the way back.
9. Robola Cooperative winery (Omala valley) — tastings of Kefalonia's crisp signature white, cheap bottles at cellar door. ~50 min from Asos, 20 min from Argostoli; one small tasting only for the rider.
10. Petani Beach — west-coast Myrtos rival with tavernas and sunset aspect, on the Paliki peninsula. Honest: ~1h15 each way from Asos; only do it as the second half of an Argostoli day if you're enjoying the riding.
11. Ithaca day trip — car ferry Sami→Pisaetos (~45 min, foot passengers fine; check 2026 timetable at the port) or seasonal Fiskardo boat trips. Honest: a long logistics day from Asos; the Fiskardo boat-tour version (or your own hire boat to the channel coves) gives 80% of it for less hassle. Optional.
12. Skip: Xi Beach & Mt Ainos — Xi's red sand is fun but 1h30+ each way (Petani covers the Paliki itch); Ainos summit needs a car and rewards mainly with views you'll get from the coast roads anyway.

Suggested day structure

• Day 1 (30 Aug, arrive ~16:00 in Asos): settle in, village swim, harbour dinner.
• Asos/castle day: castle walk early, beach, laziest day.
• Myrtos day: viewpoint + morning swim, back for late lunch in Asos (short-ride day).
• Fiskardo loop: Emblisi snorkel → Fiskardo lunch → Foki snorkel → home (north loop).
• Caves loop (big day): leave 09:45 → Drogarati 10:45 → Melissani ~11:30 → Sami or Antisamos lunch/swim → home by ~17:00.
• Boat day: Fiskardo or Agia Efimia hire boat, Ithaca-channel coves.
• Argostoli loop: turtles by 09:00 → town mooch → Robola winery → (optional Petani) → home.
• 6 Sep: pack, transfer ~11:45 for GQ261 at 14:25.

Notes

• Driving: Kefalonia roads are good asphalt but relentlessly winding with sheer drops and gravel patches on bends, especially Asos–Myrtos–Fiskardo. Avoid driving after dark — goats and no lighting. Budget real time: 30 km ≈ 45–50 min here.
• Fuel: no petrol station in Asos. Nearest pumps are on the main north–south road (~15 min, direction Argostoli) and at Fiskardo/Agia Efimia side. Top up whenever you pass one; a 125cc tank comfortably does any day-loop above.
• Sea & season: early September water is ~24–25°C — peak-warm, great snorkelling visibility. Crowds drop sharply after 1 Sep; everything (caves, tavernas, boat hire) still fully open. Carry cash for beach canteens and cave tickets.

Context: Arrive 17 Sep 15:55, depart 20 Sep 12:25 → one evening + two full days (18–19) + a lazy last morning. September is peak rainy season: expect heavy showers most days (usually short bursts, often afternoon), rough seas on the west coast, and thin crowds — but sunsets do still happen between fronts. Base: Grand Ocean Bay Resort; transfers already booked (S1S1QK1697).

⚠️ Book ahead

Honestly, almost nothing. Low season = walk-up availability everywhere. The exceptions:

• Southern islands snorkel trip — book 1–2 days out max, via Klook/GetYourGuide or hotel desk, and only once you've seen the forecast. Tours cancel in rough seas; booking from NZ months ahead is pointless.
• Hon Thom cable car — no need to pre-book tickets, BUT check it's running: Sun World has historically closed it for annual maintenance in September. Verify on phuquoc.sunworld.vn a few days before.
• VinWonders/Safari tickets: buy online day-before for ~10–15% off (vinwonders.com flash sales), otherwise gate is fine.

Ranked list

1. Hon Thom cable car + Sun World / Aquatopia — world's longest over-sea cable car (~7.9 km) from An Thoi; spectacular over the archipelago even in moody weather. Ticket price includes the water park. Weather-dependent for views; closes in high wind. Check Sept maintenance (above).
2. An Thoi islands snorkel trip — half/full-day boat to Hon May Rut, Hon Gam Ghi etc.; you've got your own gear, so a cheap group boat works. Heavily weather-dependent in Sept — go on the calmest-looking day, expect reduced visibility.
3. Sunset Sanato Beach Club — the west-coast sunset spot (surreal art installations on the sand). Entry fee redeemable against a drink. Only worth it if the sky is co-operating; check at 4pm and jump in a Grab.
4. Grand World evening ("Venice of Phu Quoc") — free entry; gondolas, Teddy Bear Museum, and the Quintessence of Vietnam show (~21:00). Kitsch but genuinely fun solo for an evening, and mostly fine in rain (covered walkways). Pair with Vinpearl side of the island.
5. Duong Dong Night Market — Bach Dang St; grilled seafood, sea urchin, rolled ice cream. Best solo dinner on the island. Rain-proof enough (stalls covered).
6. VinWonders + Vinpearl Safari — the island's big wet-weather card. Safari is legitimately good — Vietnam's best zoo, semi-wild bus section. VinWonders is aimed at families; solo adult verdict: the Sea Shell aquarium and Once Show (18:45) are excellent, the rides skippable. Do Safari morning + VinWonders late afternoon/evening if rain sets in; combo tickets save ~15%.
7. Sao Beach (Bai Sao) — the postcard white-sand beach, east coast, which is the *sheltered* side in SW-monsoon September — often calmer than Long Beach. Free (beach clubs charge for loungers). Can still cop seaweed this season; manage expectations. Long Beach = save it for resort strolls.
8. Quick culture loop (half day): Phu Quoc Prison museum (sobering, 45 min), Khai Hoan or Red Boat fish sauce factory (free, pungent, 20 min), a pepper farm (free). All near the Sao Beach/An Thoi run — chain them with one Grab car (half-day driver).
9. Ham Ninh fishing village — rickety pier, flower crab lunch. Atmospheric for an hour; skippable if time is tight.
10. Night squid fishing — Eat your catch. Fun solo icebreaker but very weather-dependent and frequently cancelled in Sept; treat as a bonus, not a plan.

Suggested day structure

• Eve 17th: settle in, Duong Dong Night Market dinner (Grab, ~10 min from most Long Beach resorts).
• Day 1 (18th) — the sea day (pick the better forecast of the two): morning snorkel boat OR Hon Thom cable car + Aquatopia; back by ~16:00; Sunset Sanato if sky is clear; night market or resort dinner.
• Day 2 (19th) — the land day: culture loop south (prison, fish sauce, pepper, Sao Beach swim) OR Safari morning; late afternoon VinWonders/Once Show; Grand World evening + Quintessence show.
• Wet-weather fallback (either day): Safari (animals are out in rain) → Sea Shell aquarium → Grand World's covered arcades → long lunch, spa, and an early night. Nothing on this island punishes a written-off afternoon.
• Morning 20th: resort pool/Long Beach walk; transfer is booked — be in the lobby ~10:00 for the 12:25 Scoot flight.

Notes

• Grab: works well on Phu Quoc (cars + bikes), plentiful around Duong Dong/Long Beach, thin at An Thoi/Sao Beach after dark — get the driver's number or book a return. Cash still king at markets; cards fine at Vin/Sun venues.
• Motorbike honesty: Vietnam recognises only 1968-convention IDPs; NZ issues 1949-convention ones — so even with your IDP (cat. A), riding here is technically unlicensed, and travel insurance will likely decline a claim. Thousands of tourists rent anyway, but with 2 days and cheap Grabs, it's not worth the exposure.
• September reality: ~20 rain days/month, warm (28–31°C), seas roughest on the west coast. Plan mornings for outdoor stuff; rain rarely lasts all day. Flights occasionally delayed by storms — don't book anything tight in Singapore on the 20th.
• Entry (NZ passport) — updated 22 Jul per Dean's travel agent: NZ passport holders get 30-day visa-free entry to Phu Quoc Island specifically — no e-visa required, as long as you don't travel to other parts of Vietnam. A separate digital arrival card / pre-arrival declaration is still required — complete online within 72h (3 days) of the 17 Sep arrival, get a QR code to show immigration. Currently only applies at Phu Quoc International Airport.
• Pre-arrival declaration (separate from the e-visa, added 11 Jun 2026): Phu Quoc International Airport is now part of Vietnam's Pre-Arrival Declaration pilot (alongside Tan Son Nhat/Ho Chi Minh City and Noi Bai/Hanoi). Required for all foreign passport holders — complete online at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn within 72 hours of the 17 Sep arrival (so from ~14 Sep). Save the QR code offline before flying — smoother/faster immigration on arrival. Not a visa replacement; do this in addition to the e-visa above.
